...young talents strengthen S&B

Two of the brightest young talents in the Bolton League have agreed to join Southport and Birkdale for the 2015 season.

Farnworth Social Circle’s Josh Bohannon and Horwich’s Chris Brownlow will both be playing at Trafalgar Road next summer after skipper Chris Firth moved quickly to address his team’s batting weaknesses.

Bohannon is a front-line batsman and occasional off-spinner who has already played for Lancashire’s second team, while 6’ 3” Brownlow is a 16-year-old fast-medium bowler who should also get a place in S&B’s top five.

For his part, Firth has acted quickly because he will be spending the winter playing league cricket in Tasmania.

“I’m delighted that Josh and Chris have agreed to join us,” he said. “We won’t be making an overseas signing this year and I think the pair of them will make a huge difference to us next season.

“Josh has the potential to be a very serious cricketer indeed. He has come to S&B to further his career and I reckon he can score a lot of runs for us.

“Chris already bowls quickly and he’s only going to get quicker. He has the potential to do some serious damage. Both our new signings are excellent fielders.”

S&B have signed Bohannon and Brownlow after an ultimately disappointing summer in which the first team finished tenth in the ECB Premier League.

Firth’s men managed to make over 150 on only five occasions, the last of them on July 12th, and the need to bolster the batting has not been lost on the captain.

“I was very dissatisfied with the batting, particularly in the last month of the season,” said Firth. “The job of staying in the Premier League was done and we let our standards slip. Senior players were required to stand up and they didn’t do so.

“Now we’re looking forward to next season and we want to get our business done early.”
