This summer, Knowsley Council will start work to replace the renowned Greystone footbridge across the M62 at Huyton.

Known locally as the ‘sausage bridge’, it has helped generations of the local community to safely cross the M62 since it opened in 1973.

The footbridge has now reached the end of it serviceable life and Knowsley Council is investing in a new modern replacement bridge that will cater for both cyclists and pedestrians.

The bridge will be illuminated in the evenings and will not only ensure a safe crossing route, but will also give visitors to the borough a real sense of arrival as they pass through this impressive gateway.

Cllr Mike Murphy, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development said: “This project is a significant investment into the boroughs infrastructure and while there will be some disruption to local residents and motorway drivers, we hope the careful planning and preparation will help to keep this to a minimum.

“I’m looking forward to the new bridge being completed and I hope it continues to serve the local community as well as its predecessor.”

To avoid disruption to pedestrians whilst the work is taking place, a shuttle bus service will start on 27 July, when access to the footbridge will be closed.

There will be weekend closures of the M62 between junction 4 and junction 5 in both directions for demolition and construction and separate lane closures to allow the contractors to dig 18 metre foundations in the central reservation – disruption will be kept to a minimum for local residents and motorway drivers.

Details of the shuttle bus service, M62 closure between junction 4 and junction 5 in both directions, lane closures and diversions will be made available on the council’s website www.knowsley.gov.uk and on Twitter @Knowsley_roads
