Strengthening the attack at Trafalgar ..........

Southport and Birkdale’s attack will be strengthened this season by 27-year-old Tasmanian bowler Jackson Burns.

The Trafalgar Road club have signed the left-arm seamer to help fill the gap left by the departure of Scott Lees and to bolster the first team’s attack as it seeks to come to terms with playing in the First Division of the Med Imaging Liverpool Competition.

“Jackson plays second grade cricket for the same club as the Australian Test cricketer George Bailey and we’ve been told that he can certainly swing the ball,” said skipper Chris Firth. “We’re looking forward to welcoming him and everybody at Trafalgar Road hopes he will enjoy every success this summer.

“He’ll be opening the bowling with Andy Warhurst and he could be a really good signing for us but we will have to wait and see.”

S&B’s playing strength has also been increased by the return of both Craig Todd and Dean Skelton from Fleetwood Hesketh. Todd will be captaining the second team while Skelton will be keeping wicket for the first team and probably adding more than a few rapidly-scored runs from somewhere in the middle order.

“Apart from those signings, it’s been a quiet winter and pre-season nets won’t be getting under way until March,” said Firth. “But I’ve been in contact with them on a regular basis and I’m confident that we’ll be ready for the season to get under way in April.”
