The agreement reached between Lancashire CCC and Southport and Birkdale CC in December was formalised on Wednesday evening when the Emirates Old Trafford chief
executive Daniel Gidney and S&B chairman Tony Elwood signed the historic staging agreement which will bring County Championship cricket to Trafalgar Road for the next three years.
Gidney, who was guest speaker at the West Lancashire Cricket Society's monthly meeting, told his audience that he had been impressed by the Club’s proactive management of recent games at the Club, as well as their enthusiasm, drive and commitment.
Elwood also welcomed the signing of the deal which will turn Trafalgar Road into Lancashire’s second home for the next three years. “To put pen to paper on this deal is a dream come true,” he said “We have been talking to Lancashire about the possibility of a long term agreement for some time and the certainty of being able to stage a game for each of the next three years enables us to put plans in place that I hope will ensure the future of County Cricket in Southport for the foreseeable future.”
This year's fixture will see Lancashire hosting a highly-rated Durham side in a four-day Division One match at Trafalgar Road over four days beginning on Saturday 16th July. The game promises to be a big draw for cricket fans with the men from Emirates Old Trafford looking to consolidate their place in the top tier of English domestic cricket and Durham, who have won the title in three of the last eight years, being skippered by the highly regarded and ever competitive Paul Collingwood.
