CALDY YOUNGSTERS HAVE A GREAT DAY AT OLD TRAFFORD

Form Guard of Honour at NatWest T20 Blast

We are pleased to print a report from Caldy Cricket Club on their day at Emirates Old Trafford last Saturday.

The 21st May 2016 was a special day for a group of junior players from Caldy Cricket Club as the club had been selected to provide the Guard of Honour at Lancashire’s opening game in their defence of the NatWest T20 Blast trophy, against the Derbyshire Falcons.

Very heavy rain greeted us as we got off the coach but started to ease as the boys stocked up on the freebies, visited the food outlets and met Ian Seddon, the Education Manager from the LCCC Foundation. The day was made even better for one of our under 11s who joined Steven Croft and Wes Durston in the middle for the coin toss.

Another shower led to a further delay with Caldy ignoring the rain and leading a conga in stand B with the boys (and parents) doing their best to appear on the big screen. A steady stream of donuts, bacon strips, ice cream and other goodies also helped to pass the time. However back to the cricket and Derbyshire won the toss and elected to field. Sporting their new limited edition training tops, the 16 Caldy boys led the players out and game on.

After a quick dash back to their seats, the Caldy group watched as Lancashire struggled to 131-7 off 19 overs with only a few opportunities to celebrate 4s and 6s. Derbyshire’s reply saw a quick 30 (off 15) from Wes Durston and then a top score of 71 by Hamish Rutherford (off 40), to take the visitors home inside 14 overs and a 9 wicket win.

Thanks to Lancashire for the opportunity and a day to remember. Finally, we must mention that both sets of players were extremely generous with their time for autographs and selfies.
