All to play for at top and bottom of Division 1

Rather than worrying about the possibility of being promoted to the ECB Premier League, Burscough skipper Brendan Domigan is relieved that his team has all but secured their First Division status for 2017.

And the School Lane skipper followed this rather Ranieri-like statement with the hope that his under-strength team will be able to get through a fortnight or so in which they have been badly affected by players taking their summer holidays.

“We have a couple of weeks now when people are away, so it’s matter of surviving those weeks. Rub of the green and a bit of good fortune with the wicket could be really important but we are just trying to focus on getting better.

“When you go up, your main purpose is to stay in that division and I think that with two thirds of the season played, we’ve nearly achieved that.”

People looking at the Division One table may find Domigan’s view overly cautious, After all, Burscough are one of the six clubs covered by 29 points at the top of the table and their chances of being promoted are therefore very much alive before this Saturday’s game at Fleetwood Hesketh.

But Domigan believes that even one or two of those leading teams may find themselves in a very different position at the season’s end. And he cites his own team’s defeat by Prestatyn as evidence that there is very little between the dozen teams in the MI Dental Liverpool Competition’s middle tier.

“I think you will see some interesting results as we get nearer the end of the season,” he said. “Prestatyn are near the bottom at the moment but they have the ability to take teams out and there could be teams who are in the top four now who will be in the bottom four in the final table. It’s a very close league.”

“We didn’t play good cricket against Prestatyn but it’s the business end of the season now and every game’s a big game. We have Jon Stone and Lee Berrie back for the game at Sea Cop but we’re still without Kenny and Ryan Hughes, and Chris Andrews is also away.

“There were three of four weeks there when we didn’t play much cricket and the one that hurt us the most was the game at Highfield because we had a strong side yet we were the only team that didn’t play that day.”
