ORRELL START WITH A WIN IN A THRILLER; NORTHERN and NEW BRIGHTON ALSO BEGIN WITH WINS

Two Centuries in Divison One for the young and not so young!

Newly promoted Orrell grabbed the headlines on the opening day of the Liverpool Gin Liverpool Competition with a dramatic Premier Division win against Ormskirk. When Sam Heeley clean bowled Ormskirk last man Jamie Barnes with Ormskirk two runs short of Orrell's 191 total it signalled scenes of celebration at the Triangle’s newly developed Winstanley Road ground not seen for many a year. Earlier Richard Everett (78) (pictured reaching 50. Pic by John Barton) and Sid Patel (40) had laid the foundation for the win.

Champions Northern eased past Rainhill with an eight wicket win after Tom Sephton had done the damage with 6 for 40 in Rainhill’s total of 168, Sean Vandome contributing 91 on debut for his new club. New Brighton won a tight game against Bootle by 12 runs with skipper Andrew Clarke leading the way with 83 not out in their total of 196.  The games between Leigh and Wallasey and Lytham and Colwyn Bay were drawn.

Division One saw wins for Ainsdale, Birkenhead Park, Old Xaverians, Ranford and Wigan, where Aaron Redmond hit 126 in the nine run win over Highfield. The game between Newton Le Willows and Sefton Park was drawn in a game which saw a first senior League century from Newton’s 16 year old Ben Walkden, batting throughout for 113 not out in their 238 for 2 declared.

In Division Two there were wins for Caldy, Maghull, Liverpool, Parkfield Liscard, St Helens Town and Sutton.
