EILEEN GASKELL

Highfield's Matriarch passes away.

It is with great sadness that we report on the passing of Highfield CC Club President Eileen Gaskell at the age of 88.

Eileen and her late husband Harold and indeed the Gaskell family will be known to many who have visited the Billinge Road club, particularly those playing in the Southport and District league a number of years ago.

We publish below a tribute from Highfield Chairman Gary Speakman.

Eileen was made the club's first female honorary life member in 1993, in recognition of her overall contribution to the club over many years including as a scorer, as was her late daughter Jane. Eileen succeeded her husband Harold as president in 2005.

Eileen was a lifelong member of St Matthew's Church and ultimately became head teacher at St Matthew's School. Eileen was a constant presence at all home games, both senior and junior, she was not afraid to make her views known and was ever-present at awards and presentation events. She was the figurehead of the Gaskell family who today, offer so much support to our club. Sons Martin and Cameron work on the ground as well as doing so much more, grandson Philip is the treasurer and great grandson Elliott is a junior wicket-keeper/batsman like his grandad Cameron and the legendary great grandad Harold.

Eileen and her family's contribution to the Highfield community has been and still is, selfless and sustained. She will be missed by everyone.
