TED WILLIAMS - A TRIBUTE

A true liverpool Competition Legend

It can be safely said that the news of Ted’s passing on Monday was felt all around the Liverpool Competition and beyond, as demonstrated by the significant amount of messages and tributes on social media to a well-respected, much valued and well-liked man who has done so much for the game of cricket.

None more so than his beloved Sefton Park Cricket Club which he joined at the age of 11 in 1956 and where he made his first team debut five years later. Ted ultimately captained the side, most notably in 1972 when the club became champions of the Liverpool Competition.

His legacy at Sefton Park however, will always be his coaching work with the clubs youngsters and his unfailing desire to make sure that everyone had an equal opportunity to make the best of their talents. His quiet but authoritative approach has laid the foundation for hundreds of youngsters enjoying the game today.

Ted enjoyed success on the field representing Cheshire on five occasions, making two appearances for Lancashire 2nd X1 and earning three England caps with England Over 70’s against Australia in 2016.

Off the field Ted has contributed greatly to the management and well-being of the Liverpool Competition initially as a Committee member and ultimately as Chairman from 2006 to 2009. He safely steered the League through the final stage of the merger with the Merseyside and Southport Leagues resulting in the increase of clubs from 28 to 36 in 2008.

Current League President and great friend of Ted’s, Charlie O’Mahony recalls their playing days together at Sefton Park citing Ted as “On a par with Ray Tyler as the best all-rounder I ever played with, although Ted was the better batsman and a great slip fielder. ” Charlie also commented that “Ted was one of the most generous, obliging and hospitable people I have ever known.”

Deeply saddened, Charlie and all of us involved with the Liverpool Competition offer our deepest sympathy to Liz, the family and all at Sefton Park.
