FIRWOOD BOOTLE BELLES AND 'GROUP' TEAM BOOK PLACE IN WOMEN'S SUPER 8'S FINAL ON DAY 2 OF HARDBALL TOURNAMENT

Day 2 of the Comp's first female hardball competition threw up drama, and in the end, the Tournament's 2 finalists: Firwood Bootle Belles and the 'Group' Team (comprising players from Northern Ninjas, Old Xaverians and Sefton Park). Glorious sunshine once again met the teams at Wadham Road. Game 1 saw Bootle Belles insert opponents Liverpool and confine them to 230 in their allotted 16 overs, with Sanya taking 1-7 in her 4 overs. The opening pair in reply posted 33 to set a very strong foundation. The scoring rate was maintained and the game was closed out with the home team posting 317-1, with Hannah Gallimore scoring 22 from 13 balls.

Debutants Tarleton Tornadoes were opponents for Hightown Hurricanes in Game 2 which saw a very tense and tight finish. The Hurricanes batted first and were in trouble at the halfway stage of their innings at 196-6. A counter-offensive led by Vicky Stackpoole and Julie Allan brought them right back into the game setting Tornadoes 258 to win. Olivia Hardman was the pick of the bowlers taking 2-7.

After 8 overs, at 222-3, the game remained well balanced. A wicket in the penultimate over left Tornadoes requiring 8 to win in the final over. With one ball to go the scores were level. A scrambled single off the final delivery saw Tarleton's young side prevail in dramatic fashion.

The 2 finalists competed in the last game of the qualification stage. The Belles won the toss and decided to field. Busy batting in the first 8 overs took the 'Group' team ro 245-1 with Freya Gilbertson scoring 17 off 15 balls. From this base the scoring rate increased and a  very testing score of 309-3 was posted aided by John (21 off 14 balls) and Morris (17 off 9).

The Belles started well scoring 14 off the first 2 overs but by the halfway stage they had lost 6 wickets. Two good partnerships helped to rebuild the innings and the home side closed on 242-7 with Rachel Thomas hitting 14 of 14 balls, and Frankie Morris taking 3-11 from her 4 overs

The exiting teams all received medals and were applauded warmly.

The Super 8's Final will be contested by Firwood Bootle Belles and the 'Group' Team.

(Owing to the Pandemic, Finals Day has been cancelled in 2020 but will be rescheduled for first W&G event of the 2021 Season)
