Terrible and tragic loss of a fine young player.

With huge sorrow and sadness we report the passing of Birkenhead Park Opening Batsman Josh Downie. Josh moved to the area last summer joining Birkenhead Park from Hucknall Cricket Club where had played in the Nottinghamshire Premier League for a number of years,after playing his junior cricket with Thurgarton Cricket Club.

The many messages on social media show how the whole of the Comp have been affected by this tragedy and the League offers our sincerest condolences to Josh’s family and all three clubs.

All Birkenhead Park’s matches this weekend have been postponed.

It is with incredible sadness that we give notice of the passing of 24 year old Josh Downie, 1st team opening batsmen for Birkenhead Park CC. Josh was taken ill at nets and passed away on the evening 6th May, we offer our deepest sympathies to his family at this dreadful time.

We are absolutely devastated by today’s unbelievably sad news. JD touched the lives of so many through his warm nature, infectious laugh and precocious talent. Thoughts are with his wonderful family and friends at this time. Gone far too soon. Rest in peace#batlikejosh
