PETER WALKER
Date: 19th September 2021
S&B Captain and Comp Author
Peter Walker, whose funeral took place on Thursday, was a former Southport & Birkdale captain whose book ‘The Liverpool Competition - A Study of the Development of Cricket on Merseyside’, was highly regarded.
Peter joined S&B as an eleven year old in 1952 and was almost certainly the Club’s senior member. A capable all-rounder, Peter was a leg spin bowler whose googly often confounded opposition batsmen. He was the leading wicket taker in S&B’s championship winning side in 1975 and, as an attractive batsman, had several centuries to his credit.
He captained the side in 1976, when S&B were runners-up to Ormskirk, although Peter had the misfortune to miss much of the season through injury. He returned to full fitness the following year, leading S&B to third place in the Liverpool Competition.
Whilst Peter was also a skilful hockey player, after retiring from playing he devoted much of his time to coaching & promoting junior cricket and was a keen golfer at Hillside GC.
Peter had been a popular teacher in Formby and leaves a widow, Betty and three step-children.
