Orrell RT & Wigan continue to lead the way

2nd XI Division One Round up – Week 3 (29 April 2023)

Both Orrell RT and Wigan continued their winning ways, with their third wins of the campaign. Four wickets for Orrell's Leyland, his best at this level, had helped restrict Ainsdale to 141. Swift top scorer with 35. Moore 43 and an unbeaten 37 from Mahoney secured a five wicket victory. Patrick Fairhurst's 74 laid the foundation for a successful chase as Wigan eased to an eight wicket victory over New Brighton. Powell, although overshadowed, featured in a century opening stand. New Brighton had lost half of their side for 53 as Australian Caleb Milbanke took 5 for 27. Anders with 38 in a spirited lower order recovery.

Performance of the day came from Rainhill's overseas import, Aidan Calarco who hammered 129 (featuring 11 * 6s) out of an opening stand of 154 against Highfield. Craig Aspey's best ever performance of 5 for 12 helped limit the declaration total. Highfield lost wickets at regular intervals in the reply with Brown reaching 33 before being dismissed. Four wickets for Bullock. After a strong opening stand of 85 between Old Xaverians pair of Lyons and Weekes (45), the side lost nine wickets in adding 35 with Liverpool's Shamshir Hussain taking six for 20 after joining in the close season. Simmons 41 not out and on debut, Guru 39 in a six wicket win.

Marc Powell fell one short of a half century in a strong early order performance for Wavertree helped down the order by another 36 from Grover as they set a challenging declaration. The additional overs taken to reach the score may have counted against them as Michael Roberti's unbeaten 51 and Piggott with 29 were the main contributors as Southport Trinity were seven down as they reached 165 at the close. Four wickets for Adam Carus McDonald. Northop Hall young side held out for a draw in reaching 63 with the last pair at the crease despite John Green's five wicket haul for 10, his best since 2016. Kevin Robinson with 52 not out as four other batsmen passed 20 as Spring View passed 200. Three wickets for Arden.

2nd XI Division One Round up – Week 1 (15 April 2023)

A low scoring start to the season for the three games that were played and overcame the less than favourable recent weather.

Old Xaverians were the only side to return from an away game with a “W” in the result column. They were also the division's top scorers, having been asked to bat by hosts, Southport Trinity. New recruit from Welsh club Gorseinon, Tom Fowles helped himself to a fine 51 aided by 31 from another recruit, Coonan, as the Old Boys side reached 131. Four wickets from the ever reliable Roberti and three from Rowley. Fifteen year old Finley Davies managed just five overs last season but he stepped up with a fine 4 for 46 haul as Trinity struggled. Four players reached double figures but were unable to pass 21 as they fell to 42 run defeat.

Wigan's overseas player Caleb Milbanke started with three wickets as did Shirley as they prevented Wavertree from reaching three figures. Grover with an unbeaten 27. Wigan lost half of their batters for just 44 before 29 from Samouelle saw the home side to victory despite Grover's three wickets. Northop Hall's journey to Orrell RT ended early as the visitors young side with nine teenagers, were dismissed cheaply with four bowlers taking two each.

The games at Rainhill and Spring View were unable to start due the ground conditions.
